The Output Quality Formula

Output quality is approximately the product of two things: the model's capability and the quality of your prompt. A brilliant model given a vague prompt produces mediocre results. A good prompt can make even a mid-tier model produce expert work.

Zero-Shot, One-Shot
& Few-Shot Prompting

The number of examples you include in a prompt dramatically changes how the model interprets your request. Zero examples, one example, or a few — each has its place.

The task is unambiguous and the model has strong training on it. No example needed.

One-Shot — use when

One example sets the style and length without over-constraining the output.

Few-Shot — use when

Chain-of-Thought
Prompting

Asking an AI to "think step by step" is one of the highest-leverage changes you can make for any reasoning task. It works because intermediate steps serve as context for subsequent ones — the model essentially builds its own reasoning scaffold.

The "Think Step by Step" Effect

Prompt: If a train travels at 60mph and needs to cover 90 miles, but stops for 15 minutes en route, how long does the trip take? Answer: 1.5 hours

The model skips the stop. Direct questions on multi-step maths often produce wrong answers because no intermediate reasoning is generated.

Adding "Let's think step by step" generates intermediate reasoning. The model is now correct.

CoT Variants — Four Forms for Different Situations

Chain-of-thought is not a single technique — it's a family. Choose the right variant for the task:

Ask the model to write executable code to solve the problem instead of reasoning in prose. The code is then run to produce the answer. Eliminates arithmetic errors by offloading calculation from the LLM to a Python interpreter.

Use the AI itself to generate and evaluate multiple prompt candidates, then select the best one. Automates prompt iteration — especially useful when you need a high-performing prompt for a repeated production task and want to explore the design space systematically.

I need a prompt that reliably gets an AI to [describe task in detail]. Generate 5 distinct candidate prompts for this task. For each, score it 1–10 on: clarity, specificity, and likely output quality. Explain each score briefly. Then rewrite the highest-scoring candidate to make it even stronger.

Ask the model to produce a structured outline (the "skeleton") before expanding it. Forces better-balanced long-form content and prevents the common failure mode where early sections consume all the depth and later sections become thin.

Step 1: Write a detailed outline for [topic] with exactly 5 H2 sections. Under each H2, list 3 bullet sub-points covering what that section will include. Step 2: Review the outline. Are all sections equally substantive? Adjust if any are too thin. Step 3: Now expand each section into full, publish-ready prose.

The key is targeted refinement: identify the exact component that failed (wrong format? wrong tone? missing detail?) and change only that. Wholesale rewrites make it hard to understand what actually improved the output.

Evaluation Criteria

For every AI output, score these five dimensions before accepting it:

Accuracy

Is the factual content correct? Verify claims independently — AI hallucination is real.

Completeness

Did it address every part of the request? Partial answers are a common failure mode.

Format

Does the structure match what you specified? If not, add more explicit format instructions.

Tone

Is it appropriate for the audience? Wrong tone is a role/persona specification problem.

Length

Too long or too short? Add explicit word/sentence count constraints.

The Prompt Testing Framework

Professional prompt engineers treat prompts like software — they test systematically before deploying. Here is the framework used in production AI systems:

1 — Define success

Write down exactly what "good output" looks like before you write the prompt. Without a definition, you cannot evaluate systematically.

2 — Build a test set

Create 10–20 representative inputs covering: typical cases, edge cases, adversarial inputs ("what if the user says X?"), and known failure modes.

3 — A/B test variants

Run prompt variant A and variant B on the same test set. Change exactly one variable per test — role, format instruction, example count, or temperature.

4 — Score outputs

Score each output on your 5 criteria (accuracy, completeness, format, tone, length) using a 1–5 scale. Calculate average per variant. Pick the winner empirically, not by feel.

5 — Lock and document

Once a prompt meets your quality bar, version it. Document what you tested, what worked, and what the known failure modes are — for your future self and your team.

Failure Mode Diagnostic

When a prompt produces bad output, map the symptom to its root cause rather than rewriting everything:

Prompt Security — Injection & Jailbreak Awareness

If you deploy AI in a product, users may attempt prompt injection — inserting instructions into their input to override your system prompt. Understanding the attack surface is essential before shipping:

Security through prompting has limitsPrompt-level defences reduce risk but do not eliminate it. For high-stakes production AI (finance, healthcare, legal), treat prompt injection as an untrusted-input problem and add validation layers at the application level — not just in the prompt.
